TROPIC offers a number of cloud forest escapes only an hour from the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, a World Heritage Site.
There are activities such as adventure hikes with spectacular mountain top views over this mystical landscape, and mountain bikes to take visitors deep into the heart of cloud forest, where with a little luck they will see one of the rare spectacled bears that live in this area.
The real innovation is a new route, the Quinde Trail, which will take visitors on an exploration of ancient rural roads connecting Quito with the northern coast; these routes were used by intrepid travellers in the eighteenth century, for example the French naturalist and explorer Charles-Marie de la Condamine, to get from Esmeraldas to Quito. Today travelling is slightly easier, and the tour includes the option of mountain bikes to reach our Ecolodge in the Mindo Conservation area, famous worldwide for its bird life.
We have stays of one or two nights for bird lovers, including hikes designed to allow visitors get a glimpse of the area's many orchids and bromeliads, and some of the spectacular birds that can be seen here, in particular the salt licks frequented by the famous Cock of the Rock. There is good food to be appreciated, prepared with care as well as local organic produce, and at night, the chance to relax in the warmth alongside the river, enjoying the sounds of the forest in this setting nestled in the peaceful Ecuadorian hills.
